Multiple people shot in downtown Holyoke

HOLYOKE, MA – An investigation into a Holyoke shooting, involving multiple victims, is underway. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

When our crews first arrived earlier in the afternoon, there was a massive police response at the intersection of Maple and Sargeant Streets. Holyoke Police told us this is where a shooting took place and there were “multiple victims.”

For much of the afternoon, police cruisers could be seen constantly coming and going from the scene.

Mass. State Police spokesperson David Procopio added that a preliminary investigation indicates one victim was “on a bus that was passing through the area.”

“The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an altercation among several people. There is not believed to be any ongoing threat to the public,” Procopio added.

Our Western Mass News cameras also captured multiple people standing around watching the police response on the scene and, even now, there are still a few people who remain in the area and are keeping a close eye on what’s happening.

We are awaiting further information from police, but some of the people told us they believe some of the shots were fired inside a PVTA bus that remained on the scene until 3 p.m. We spoke with Boyd McCray of Chicopee, who said he was waiting to catch a different bus to Chicopee before everything happened.

“I heard about eight shots. I was standing on the street, waiting on the bus, and I just heard pop, pop, pop, pop, then I saw one police coming down and then I saw about a thousand more come after that,” McCray explained.

There is no word from police on a suspect or suspects and there is no further information on the victims at this time.

Maple Street is currently closed between Sargeant Street and Hampshire Street and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Did Cancer Claim the Life of Australian Opera Star Jacqueline Dark at 55

Australian opera star Jacqueline Dark has died aged 55, weeks before she was set to return to stage.

The famed performer died on Tuesday night in hospital in Sydney, according to ABC, after undergoing treatments for a rare form of cancer.

Dark was known for her generous spirit and had appeared in TV shows So You Think You Can Dance and Spicks and Specks.

She had taken a break from performing in 2022 to have chemotherapy for her cancer but returned to stage in March 2023.

The cabaret singer was a global star, having performed with leading orchestras around the world, including the Opera Australia, Victorian Opera and Pinchgut Opera.

‘Jacqui’s magnificent voice and magnetic stage presence entrenched her place in Australia’s musical history; her indefatigably upbeat personality will be long remembered,’ shared her agent Patrick Togher.

She had been set to perform as Wellgunde in a rendition of Wagner’s Das Rheingold at the Sydney Opera House next month.

The opera community has already begun to share messages of love for the late star.

‘Whenever she came into ABC Classic for an interview, we always ended up laughing so much. And as an artist, she was brave — just as happy singing cabaret or with electronic musicians as she was tackling Wagner,’ said ABC Classic Drive presenter Russell Torrance.

Erin Helyard, artistic director of Pinchgut Opera, shared: ‘Her irrepressible humour and life and energy and musicality made her one of the greatest of Australian mezzos.’

Her cabaret show earlier this year, Songs My Friends Taught Me, had been a celebration of the friends who helped get her through her cancer treatment.

Dark won numerous awards for her operatic prowess, including two Green Room Awards and a Helpmann Award.

SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. — Craig Nelson Ross Jr. was charged with kidnapping overnight in the disappearance of a 9-year-old girl in Upstate New York.

The girl went missing Saturday evening at Moreau Lake State Park, about 35 miles north of Albany, while riding her bicycle.

Her family released a statement Tuesday, saying they are “thrilled” she is home.

“We are thrilled that she is home and we understand that the outcome is not what every family gets. A huge thank you to the FBI, the New York State police, all of the agencies that were mobilized, all of the families, friends, community, neighbors and hundreds of volunteers who supported us and worked tirelessly to bring Charlotte home,” the statement continued.

After finding her abandoned bike, the family called state police, who worked around the clock to bring her home.
