One dead after Eureka Springs shooting involving officer

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. — Arkansas State Police (ASP) is currently investigating a shooting in Eureka Springs that involved an officer and left one dead.

At around 8:30 a.m. on March 2, the Eureka Springs Police Department (ESPD) posted a statement on Facebook, saying that there was “an officer-involved shooting in downtown Eureka Springs last night.”

According to a release from ASP, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the Rowdy Beaver Den advising that Christopher Vanschoick, 36, had shown a gun during a disturbance.

Two ESPD officers observed the suspect sitting in his vehicle. The officers confronted him, and a struggle ensued, according to ASP.

Vanschoick produced the handgun and one of the officers fired his gun, striking him. He was later pronounced dead.

“ASP will present an investigative case file to the prosecuting attorney, who will determine whether the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law,” according to an ASP release.

Police Involved Shooting Leaves Suspect Dead in Polk County

Polk County, Florida – On the evening of October 5, 2023, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Auburndale Police Department were involved in a shooting incident with an armed suspect. The incident unfolded after Auburndale officers were dispatched to respond to a reported stolen 2011 KIA Sorrento from a Circle K store located at Berkeley Rd and US 92 at approximately 11:10 pm.

Around 11:18 pm, authorities received a report of a two-vehicle crash on the eastbound Polk Parkway on-ramp from US 92 west. An APD sergeant arrived at the scene at about 11:23 pm and determined that one of the vehicles involved in the crash was the stolen KIA.

The situation escalated when the suspect, an adult white male, charged at and assaulted the APD sergeant. In response, the sergeant discharged his Taser, but the suspect managed to remove one of the Taser probes and continued to resist the officer.

Additional law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene, including a PCSO deputy and four other APD officers, one of whom had a K9 unit. The suspect then began threatening the officers with a knife.

Despite the K9 unit’s intervention, the suspect managed to repel the dog and aggressively approached the officers once again, brandishing the knife. In response to the immediate threat, four of the five APD officers and the PCSO deputy were compelled to discharge their firearms to neutralize the suspect. Following the incident, they initiated life-saving measures, but tragically, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force will lead the investigation into the shooting incident. Additionally, the Auburndale Police Department will conduct an investigation into the vehicle theft, while the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit will initiate its own investigation. Furthermore, an administrative investigation will be conducted, and the Medical Examiner’s office will examine the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
