Cause of death: Kris Hallenga, founder of breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, dies aged 38

Kris Hallenga, the founder of breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, has died aged 38.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 23 and lived with the illness for 15 years, tirelessly campaigning for breast cancer awareness in that time.

A statement on the charity’s website said: “She hasn’t lost a battle, she wasn’t in a fight and she certainly wouldn’t want you to see her death as tragic.

“She was simply living. She was 38 and died with fulfilment and a heart full of love.”

Ms Hallenga’s breast cancer was terminal by the time it was diagnosed in 2009.

“Kris’ ambition was for no one else to find themselves in her position and so CoppaFeel! was born, to ensure breast cancers are diagnosed early and accurately,” the charity said.

Describing her as “founder, boob chief, colleague, friend and queen of glittering turds”, CoppaFeel! said she was “the biggest promoter of being ‘alive to do those things'”.

“She approached life in a wildly creative, fun and fearless way, and showed us that it is possible to live life to the full with cancer.”

Last year Ms Hallenga threw a living funeral, where guests were invited to sign a cardboard replica of her coffin and childhood footage was projected around Truro Cathedral in Cornwall.

Dawn French did the eulogy in character as the Vicar of Dibley, while Ms Hallenga gave a speech and sparkled in a glittery jumpsuit.

Afterwards, she posted on Instagram: “I’ve never felt love like it. I’ve never felt joy like it. I’ve never felt such kinship with mortality. I’ve never felt so alive.”

Ms Hallenga campaigned for cancer education to be included in the school curriculum, won the Women of the Year Outstanding Young Campaigner award, received an honorary doctorate from Nottingham Trent University and wrote a memoir titled Glittering a Turd.

A post on her Instagram page announcing the news to her 146,000 followers was signed off by her cat Lady Marmalade.

It said: “Her final message from her to you would be one that probably involved checking your chest, getting in some cold water, talking more about death and dying, that even the turdiest of turds are glitterable, that you should always see the silly side of life, that she LOVED her life and that giving Neighbours 2.0 is worth another chance.”

Attempted church: Body found in home of man who allegedly pulled gun on pastor in North Braddock

attempted church- A body was found in the home of a man who is accused of pulling a gun on a pastor at a church service in North Braddock on Sunday.

The North Braddock church service was interrupted when a man jumped in front of the pastor with a gun in an apparent attempt to shoot him.

This happened at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church on Lobringer Avenue. The church live-streams its services and captured the moment a man pulled out a gun and aimed it directly at Pastor Glenn Germany, that gun jamming.

“I’m thankful to God that I’m still here, because he definitely pulled the trigger,” said Germany.

Germany told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that he had never seen the gunman before Sunday. He says he noticed the gunman frequently coming in and out of the church, even giving the pastor eye contact. That’s when the unexpected happened.

“I started to begin to preach and all of a sudden, from my left-hand side, I saw him move from the back to the front of the church, and he set up in the front corner of the church and smiled at me,” Germany said. “…All of a sudden, I just saw a gun pointing right at me. And at that point, all I could try to do is run for cover.”

Church members quickly jumped into action as Germany took cover. One man even jumped to tackle the gunman. Eventually, he was able to remove the gun from the man’s hands.

“He could have lost his life in that struggle,” Germany said of the man who jumped in. “But he sacrificed himself for everyone, and he’s the hero.”

Court paperwork identified the suspect as Bernard Polite, 26, of Braddock.

According to the criminal complaint, Polite confessed to police that he tried to shoot Germany because, “God told him to do it,” and that he wanted to go to jail to clear his mind.

Police said a man was found shot to death inside.

Early Monday morning, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man found shot to death in that home as Derek Polite, 56, of North Braddock.

Neighbors tell Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 the two men are related.

“Nothing bad has ever happened in that home. There were no domestic violence, no fights, no argument that we know of that we could ever have heard,” neighbor Guy Diperna said.

Neighbors were shocked to hear about the turn of events. They said Bernard and Derek were nice and there were never any issues.

“I just hope it ain’t Bernard, that’s all, because he was a nice guy, and so was Derek,” neighbor Benjamin Jordan said.

So far, no charges have been filed in connection with the body that was found and Allegheny County police are investigating. that incident.

Meanwhile, Bernard Polite was arraigned early Monday morning on charges connected to the incident in the church, including attempted homicide.

17-year-old grazed by bullet at Dunbar High School in DC

A student was grazed by a bullet inside Dunbar High School in Northwest D.C. on Friday morning, police say. The gunfire flew through a window from outside, police said.

The student, a 17-year-old girl, received minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, police said at a news conference.

“She is totally fine and expected to make a full recovery,” Asst. Chief Leslie Parsons said.

There is no active threat inside the school, police said. However, the school is on lockdown, DC Public Schools said.

“I want everyone to know that are students are secure and they are safe,” Chief of Police Pamela Smith said.

Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the school at First and N streets NW, north of New York Avenue, at about 9:55 a.m.

The area around the school is shut down. A large number of officers can be seen.

An investigation is underway. No information on a suspect or any arrests was immediately released. Police are set to provide additional details soon. Chief of Police Pamela Smith and Mayor Muriel Bowser are expected to speak.

Bowser was at an upbeat event with children, marking the opening of the annual Flower Mart at Washington National Cathedral, when she received a call apparently notifying her of the shooting.

It’s cold comfort for families and all D.C. residents, but crime in the District is down. The number of homicides is down 22% so far this year, compared to the same period last year. Assault with a dangerous weapon is down 31%. Total violent crime is down 25%.

Police said at about 11 a.m. that these streets were closed:

  • 100-200 blocks of N Street NW between First Street and New Jersey Avenue
  • 200 block of Morgan Street NW between New Jersey Avenue and Kirby Street
  • 1200 block of Kirby Street NW between N Street and New York Avenue

Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to contact police.
