ESPAÑOLA, N.M. —
New Mexico State Police say one person was shot during a protest regarding the of placing a statue of Don Juan de Oñate at the Rio Arriba County Clerk’s office in Española.
State police also say one person is in custody in relation to the shooting.
Rio Arriba County officials had planned on dedicating the statue at the county office today, but canceled the ceremony on Wednesday due to safety concerns.
According to the Espanola Police Department the suspect was arrested just south of Espanola.
NMSP is the lead agency in charge of the investigation.
